BERLIN (Reuters) - A painstaking two-year investigation to determine which of two skulls belonged to Friedrich Schiller has found neither is a match, prolonging a 180-year-old mystery over the celebrated German poet's remains. A team of international experts came to their surprise conclusion after comparing DNA samples from the two skulls in question to material from the graves of the poet's relatives.

HARTLAND, Vt. - The 130-acre property was exactly what Michel Guite and his family wanted: an old Vermont farm with mountain views, rolling hills and meadows. There was, however, one wrinkle: The property included a small family cemetery — with the grave of a War of 1812veteran — surrounded by a fence on a scenic knoll.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Artist Kearine Muizz draws her greatest inspiration from places many people spend their lives trying to avoid — cemeteries. For more than two years, Muizz has wandered through graveyards, searching for the spark that will guide her to complete her most challenging work: nearly two dozen impressionist paintings based on the statues she saw at Paris' storied Pere-Lachaise cemetery. The project was inspired by the slaying of a close friend.

Austrailia - A former Perth chef jailed for life for the murder of aspiring British model Sally Anne Bowman has launched an appeal against his conviction, his lawyers said today. He was jailed in February after a trial at the Old Bailey and was told he would not be eligible for parole for 34 years.

I apologize for being absent from Taph for so long. I have over 3000 post-worthy articles to post, some of them dating as far back as November. I also have dozens of submissions from members, which I greatly appreciate! Remember that news articles post in order of publication date, not posting date. Browse through the articles using the pagination feature ( Prev-1-2-3-4-Next) at the bottom of the page to look for newly posted articles. After all, if you haven't read it,, it's still news!!

Possible remains from crematory gone for good at landfill
Â
By Chris Joyner
Jackson, MS - The chairman of the state funeral board said he plans to take some action at Thursday's meeting regarding allegations Jackson crematory operator Mark Seepe improperly disposed of human remains. But Charles Riles wouldn't be specific Tuesday about his plans. Seepe could not be reached for comment. He previously told The Clarion-Ledger he has properly cremated bodies brought to him but acknowledged on Friday he knew bones were in a trash bin in his parking lot along with construction materials.

Job description: Female applicants to bathe and clothe the dead. Also apply makeup and occasionally work on the corpses at night. And carry their coffins. It is a job no Singapore woman took up, one funeral director said. So he had to look overseas for those willing to work as female pallbearers, who would not just help to carry coffins, but also perform the above duties on dead women to help the embalmers.

Many things can keep family and friends from physically attending a funeral, so Wesley Music launched a new online service that gives mourning relatives and friends the opportunity to pay their last respects via a funeral webcast. Funeral homes participating in this program, have placed small web cameras throughout the chapel, so customers who sign up for the service can share this private moment with others via the Internet.

Romania - This is one of the most impressive and important monuments in Romania's history, as it is dedicated to the valiant resistance of the Romanian army against the German attacks, in the summer of 1917, when all seemed lost and defeat unavoidable. The victory recorded by the Romanian army at Marasti was a costly one, with a great number of dead and wounded, but proved to be a crucial turning point in the war. The monument we can still see today is an impressive and highly interesting body of work, an architectural achievement that is still a wonder.

Georgia - The effort to reform the death services industry in Georgia is a year behind schedule, but House leaders should continue the initiative. When a family entrusts the body of a deceased loved one to a representative of the funeral, cemetery or cremation industry, they should get a minimum level of professionalism and respect. Anything less is unacceptable.
