Doctors have long understood the power of grief in connection to one's health, and now, a new medical study shows just how fragile a broken heart really can be. Men, in particular, are more susceptible to suffering serious health consequences on the anniversaries marking the deaths of loved ones, especially a parent, according to new research from the American College of Cardiology.

By Malcolm Moore
Rome - After enduring howls in the night and creaking staircases for the past three years, an Italian family is preparing to sue the previous owners of their house for not telling them it was haunted. Gaetano Bastianelli, 57, and his wife Stefania paid €120,000 (£94,000, $147,169.02 USD) for the modern home in the Umbrian town of Spoleto in 2005 - encouraged by the fact that all the furniture and fittings were left by the owners, right down to the coffee cups. "We considered it the deal of the century," said Mr Bastianelli.

Most people don't usually think of a cemetery as a place for history, but some of Nevada's most prominent historical figures can be found at the Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City. Lone Mountain can trace its beginnings to the early 1860s and the earliest days of Carson City. Many pioneering Carsonites-as well as several governors and other 19th century state leaders-were laid to rest at Lone Mountain.

Jackson, MS - When Cindy Johnston's husband died in 2004, she followed his wishes and had his remains cremated by Mark Seepe Funeral Directors and Crematorium in Jackson. She recalls Seepe as helpful, professional and charming. "He was very charismatic. He probably could have talked us into anything at that point," she said. It is a common impression left by a man now under intense scrutiny after photographs taken by a former employee surfaced last week that appear to show human remains - ashes and bones - being heaped together in a metal drum.

NEW YORK -- Participants in a ghoulish scheme to plunder corpses for body parts made up names for the deceased so that the tissue could never be traced as it was sold for use in unsuspecting transplant patients, one participant testified. Some corpses had signs of cancer, tuberculosis or other illnesses, Lee Cruceta testified Tuesday at the trial of another man charged in the scheme. Other bodies were visibly decrepit, Cruceta said.

A message from Jon:
On Friday, March 14th, a tornado hit the city, causing serious damage to the historic Victorian Oakland Cemetery, the original municipal cemetery for the city of Atlanta. Pictures of the damage and details are available here: http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/damage.html Most of the press coverage has naturally focused on the damage to buildings and homes in Atlanta. I am hoping to get the word out about the plight of Oakland Cemetery, which was already financially strapped before this disaster.

Boston, MA - A couple was awarded $325,000 today by a jury that ruled that they suffered emotional distress when the remains of their stillborn son were lost and possibly cremated by a Boston funeral home. The civil verdict in Suffolk Superior Court came after 1 1/2 days of deliberation and made the couple very happy. Robert and Therese Bellissimo Benedict said they suffered needlessly because of a mistake made by a local funeral home that lost the personal touch when it was absorbed by a national chain.

Harry Houdini escaped from handcuffs, straitjackets and water-filled oversized milk cans - but the one thing he could never get away from was publicity. Larry Sloman and William Kalush, authors of "The Secret Life of Houdini," theorize that the magician was fatally poisoned by a vengeful clairvoyant on Halloween of 1926, and not felled by a ruptured appendix as long believed.

Johannesburg, South Africa- An East Rand family are traumatised after they found out on Saturday at their little boy's funeral that his grave wasn't big enough for his coffin. Dallyn de Jager, three, drowned last week in the shallow swimming pool at his parents' home in Nigel the day after his birthday. At Dallyn's funeral the family was further traumatised when they had to widen and lengthen the grave before they could bury him.
