The ashes of a Lutheran pastor who was a fireworks enthusiast will be shot into the sky over Marine on St. Croix during the town's July 4th celebration.

The canister that will include the ashes of the Rev. Gordon Bergin will display gold crosses, a traditional part of the town's fireworks show.

Bergin, the longtime pastor of Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, died in February at age 93.

His son, the Rev. Brian Bergin, said the ashes-lofting is what his father wanted. The younger Bergin is pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Almelund, Minn.

Fascinated by the power and artistry of fireworks since childhood, the younger Bergin founded Northern Lighter Pyrotechnics Inc., a fireworks club that has put on the Marine display for nearly 20 years.

His father "enjoyed going to Marine on St. Croix when we'd shoot the display there," he said. "He and Mom would drive over from Lino Lakes and be down in the valley there to hear the fireworks go off and see them in the sky."

"It's a beautiful shell," Brian Bergin said of the gold-crosses display. "I've seen them when they've filled the entire sky, the larger ones, but we can only shoot so many."

The Northern Lighters obtained the fireworks permit from Marine officials, as it has done so many years, with no problem, Brian said. "They were in favor of it."

He, his wife and two sons will be there, saying their last goodbyes. "We're celebrating his life," Brian said. "To have him go out in a blaze of glory, that would be terrific."
