Prehistoric cemeteries found at Beliyakande hill PDF Print E-mail

Sri Lanka.

A cluster of prehistoric cemeteries on the southern slope of Beliyakande hill within the Yatigalpotte Grama Niladhari division was uncovered by the Archaeology Department after extensive investigations in the area.

The investigators found scattered stone slabs covered with thick jungle shrubs. The approach road had been very badly eroded by rain water.

According to the Archaeology Department officials who conducted the investigations, there is one cemetery on the approach road. It was exposed by soil erosion and efforts are needed to restore it and make it a showcase for visitors.

The land where the age-old cemeteries were found are owned by Y.M.W. Tennakoon and his sister Punchi Kumari. They said they believe there could be hundreds of prehistoric cemeteries in the area, along with other items of historical value, and the Archaeology Department should be thorough in their excavations to unearth them.

They said steps should be taken to demarcate the boundaries of the area and restore the cemetery sites. This would allow them to manage the rest of the land while giving them a link to those who had gone before them.
