Roman burial ground unearthed PDF Print E-mail

Rome, Jan 22: Italian archaeologists unveiled on December 6 a Roman burial ground, recently discovered in a stretch of bleak wasteland overlooked by a chicken processing factory.

"It is a very rare find, the experience of a lifetime," Iannaccone said. Rome archaeologists began to work at the area a few months ago when a developer applied for permission to build houses on the abandoned scrubland. The first thing they found was a deeply worn road, then a huge water tank some 40 metres long and some simple, shallow graves. When they dug lower, they discovered the family tomb.

The largest stone coffin is topped by a sculpture of a man and woman reclining, indicating that it contains the bodies of a married couple. In front of it, a very tiny sarcophagus clearly belonging to a child.

The archaeologist with overall responsibility for digs in the east of the Roman capital, Stefano Musco, said he hoped more tombs might be uncovered if his team was given the time and the money needed to carry out a thorough search of the area.

The scrubland where the burial ground was discovered, in the outskirts of Rome, is surrounded by a chicken plant, a disused factory, a scrap yard.

"A discovery like this gives back its dignity and its identity to an area that has suffered great violence from humans and from urban development." said Musco.

Archaeological findings are a common occurrence in Rome but the celebrations of the workers at the excavation site showed that finding something that has somehow managed to allude the tomb raiders for so long is a rare and happy occurrence.
