Company Maintains Land Was Horse Cemetery
November 8, 2004

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Three individuals with a Bristol company are facing charges of desecrating a suspected 19th-century burial ground in Massachusetts and removing headstones from the site. ELJ Inc. apparently intended to turn a 41-acre property in Westport, Mass., into a residential subdivision. Westport police said the company tampered with an unmarked burial site, which is a violation of Massachusetts law. Police stopped the digging.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Majewski went to the company, and found at least 20 unmarked headstones next to a stone crusher.

In a statement, the company said it was told by a previous owner the site contained a horse cemetery. ELJ said there was no evidence of a human cemetery in the deed to the site.

The area is believed to be a Quaker burial ground, which are numerous in the area. Archaeologists have been called in to investigate further. The Westport Board of Health wants to determine how many gravesites were destroyed.

Majewski told The Associated Press the company tried to remove any evidence the area was a burial ground. He said the action was spurred by greed.

Police charged Everett Francis, Christopher Francis and Christine Matrone with removing gravestones with intent to eliminate a burial site and conspiracy to willfully destroy a burial site.
