PORTSMOUTH - The governor's task group on the state's crematoriums may soon be able to identify the ashen remains found in unmarked urns at Bayview Crematory. Bill Kassler, the state medical director and chairman of Gov. John Lynch's task group on New Hampshire crematoriums, said investigators in the task group will likely identify the unmarked remains "in a few days."

"It's a high priority for us to get information back to the families," said Kassler.

The remains were found in February during a state police search of Bayview Crematory in Seabrook. Some of the 12 urns that were discovered had no apparent identification. Investigators have been working to identify these remains and return them to the correct family members by using cremation records that were confiscated at the scene.

Kassler said investigators are "cautiously optimistic" that they can properly identify the remains soon, while the ongoing investigation into Bayview and two state medical examiner employees, Gene Nigro and Kathrine Wieder, has made the process more difficult.

Kassler said they are going through the many boxes of forms and certificates confiscated from Bayview, in hopes that some of these records will include numbers that match the ID tags placed with each body before cremation.

"Most crematoriums will put ID tags with the remains and record that number. That tag stays with the remains always and is polished up in most cases," said Kassler. "So far we believe Bayview used this system and we believe this is the best way to identify these remains."

Kassler would not say, however, if the urns with the unidentified remains had ID tags in them.

"We need to confirm that in each case," said Kassler. "It is complicated because some of the information is in the county attorney's office because of the investigation," Kassler said.

Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams said State Police Troop A is "plowing through" the boxes of paperwork. He cannot release the forms until the criminal case against Nigro and Wieder is completely over, but if some paperwork is found to have no bearing on the trial, Reams said he may release those early.
