Bones from a paupers’ grave dating back more than 100 years were unearthed by workmen digging a fresh plot at a Mid Wales cemetery, it was revealed today.
The 110-year-old bones were unearthed by contractors working at Newtown Cemetery and then left on a spoil heap, council bosses said. Officials from the authority said they were alerted by a member of the public who saw the remains

A spokesman for Powys County Council said contractors were working on a new grave and, while digging, accidentally caused the side of the paupers’ grave next to it to collapse.

The incident led to the remains of the grave’s two occupants being released.

Council spokesman John Evans said: “Contractors were working on a new grave when the side of it collapsed, and material from the next-door paupers’ grave fell in.

“The contractors spotted it had collapsed and carried out work to restore it, but obviously they missed a bit.

“The scoop probably picked up the bones before the collapse was noticed.”
