Hospital Chief Jailed for Selling Human Bones PDF Print E-mail

A former hospital manager was jailed for 10 months today after admitting stealing human bones and selling them on to private clinics. Christopher Ibbotson, 48, pleaded guilty to theft at Sheffield Crown Court, half way through his trial.

A jury was told how Ibbotson had managed the “bone bank” at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, which provided pieces of human bones for grafts and other operations.

The court heard how he sold pieces of bones to two private hospitals in the city, pocketing more than £12,000.

Ibbotson had denied 10 counts of thefts but suddenly changed his pleas today and also asked for another 34 thefts to be taken into consideration.

Sentencing him, Judge Roger Keen said: “The property was there, donated by the living and the dead, for the good of the public and you decided to utilise it for your own profit.

“You were in a substantial position of trust which you abused.

“Because of the nature of that in which you were involved the impact on the public’s confidence in bone donation can’t be underestimated.”

The judge also ordered Ibbotson, of Gristhorpe, near Filey, North Yorkshire, to pay back £12,443 to the hospital trust and pay £4,500 prosecution costs.
