Human bones found in Albany basement PDF Print E-mail

ALBANY, Ind. — Human bones were discovered in recent weeks in the basement of a downtown Albany business building, Delaware County Coroner James Clevenger Jr. said Friday. The bone fragments, numbering more than 100, were discovered in early December by the building’s latest tenant, said Clevenger, who declined to release the address of the building involved. The coroner took some of the bone fragments to the Ball State University anthropology department, where staff determined the remains were those of a human, probably a male, and were “between 50 and 500 years old,” Clevenger said.

Authorities believe the remains are at least 100 years old, and “were more than likely underground at some point,” the coroner said. An investigation by Clevenger and Albany police has determined the bones had been placed in the Albany basement since 1965, he added.

“We don’t believe a crime has been committed any time in the recent past,” Clevenger said, although authorities wonder “why (the bones) were in somebody’s possession” and “how they came to be” in the basement.

The coroner this week collected all of the fragments and took them to Stephen Nawrocki, a forensic anthropologist at the University of Indianapolis.

Clevenger is hopeful Nawrocki, through DNA and other testing, will be able to provide significantly more details about the source of the bones, including whether they all belonged to the same individual.

The coroner said he receives as many as 30 calls a year concerning discovery of bones, which almost always end up being those of animals.
