UK - NEW bone fragments have been unearthed from a shallow grave at Jersey's horror home, police said yesterday. A sniffer dog trained to detect human remains reacted positively when shown the pieces, found in the same place as a child;s skull. They could belong to a youngster abused at the kids' home.

And they have been sent for DNA analysis to see if they come from the same skeleton as the skull, another corpse or an animal.

Police also disclosed that detectives are probing a boys suicide at the home amid fears he hanged himself to escape abuse by staff and their paedophile pals.

The move came after relatives of the lad came forward to ask cops to investigate.

Deputy chief officer Lenny Harper said: They feel there are issues to be looked at.

Officers have been sent to mainland Britain, Australia, Thailand and Germany to interview victims who say they were physically and sexually abused at the Haut de la Garenne home in St Martin.

Forty suspects have been identified and cops are watching ports in case any try to flee.Mr Harper said there were now more than 200 potential victims and witnesses.

A flood of calls has prompted police to nearly double their team to 35. They include 12 reinforcements from the mainland.

Two forensic experts who led the search for human remains after the 7/7 bombings in London have also been drafted in.

Julie Roberts and Karl Harrison will probe sites where cops fear bodies could be dumped.

The clearance of a torture chamber containing iron shackles and a vast stone bath is expected to take a fortnight. Three other chambers are thought to lead off the dungeon.

Meanwhile, a former volunteer at the home in the early 70s told yesterday how she saw children frozen with fear.

Christine Bowker said she met a wall of silence when she tried to raise concerns. She described some staff members as ice cold.

Grave Epigrams

The rising morn cannot insure,
That we shall end the day,
For death stands ready at the door,
To snatch our lives away.
