HALLOWEEN lived up to its name for flea market shoppers at Mt Gravatt in Brisbane yesterday when a 64-year-old stall holder allegedly tried to sell human remains.

A shopper at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds market contacted police at 10.15am after discovering the rare offering at one of the stalls.

A police spokesman said the discovery was "extremely unusual" and police had confiscated the skeleton and initially investigated charging the man with improperly dealing with human remains.

Upper Mt Gravatt Detective Sergeant Spiros Lentakis said the skeleton was found in a box at the stall. He said he and his partner confiscated the skeleton, then questioned the man.

The skeleton appeared to have been used for medical purposes, as it had a hinge in the skull for easy access to the brain cavity and the vertebrae were numbered.

"The bloke says he's had it for 10 years," he said. "He owns a miniskip business and he said he found it in a miniskip. His wife told him to clean some of the junk out of the garage and then someone saw it at the market and said 'ahh, a skeleton'."

Sgt Lentakis said the skeleton would be tested at the John Tonge Centre today to determine if the bones were of human origin.

If the bones were human, police would attempt to trace their identity, he said
