Unearthed bones found during cemetery visit PDF Print E-mail

NEW MILFORD — A woman visiting a New Milford cemetery Tuesday stumbled on human bones in a pile of dirt, authorities said this morning. The bones were probably unearthed by Atwood Cemetery workers who were digging in the area, said Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. He said the bones were probably unearthed from an older grave. The Coroner’s Office has recovered the bones and will have a forensic anthropologist from the Illinois State Police examine them, too.
There does not appear to be any foul play involved in this,” Iasparro said.

The goal now is to date the bones to see if they were part of an old grave, Coroner Sue Fiduccia said. That could take two or three weeks.

She said knowing the bones’ age will give some peace of mind to families who have recently buried relatives in the cemetry.
