Burial Comes 105 Years Late for Fallen Soldier PDF Print E-mail

It was a final farewell Saturday to a soldier who died for his country, but the funeral service was 105 years late. Walter Smith from Lycoming County was captured and killed in 1901 but his body was never found.

His family held onto hope that there would someday be a proper burial in his hometown of Muncy. Instead, this Memorial Day weekend they buried his spirit at Muncy Cemetery.

Private Smith was 24 years old when he was killed in the Spanish American War. There was no funeral at the cemetery then, no burial. His body was never recovered from the Phillipines.

"It is so fitting this Memorial Day weekend to finally bury Walter Smith's spirit here in his hometown in Muncy, after 105 years," said relative Peggy Bailey.

She is one of Private Smith's descendants who came to pay respects now, something his mom and dad could never do.

"His parents had saved a space for him here in the cemetery, hoping the government would locate his remains in the Phillipines and ship the body here to by buried by their side," added Bailey.

"It's something we had to do. He's a vet who died 105 years ago, who wasn't fully honored. It was time to honor his sacrifices," said Muncy Historical Society Director Bill Poulton.

The society helped organize this tribute to a hometown boy who gave so much so long ago. He now has a final resting place, even if it is only in spirit.

"I think Private Smith is smiling down on us today. I think these beams of sunshine are coming from Private Smith today," continued Poulton.

A fitting line from a 1901 newspaper article was read at the service.

"Private Smith was every inch a hero, and it was while he was fighting bravely that he was wounded and captured. "

Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind; Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave. I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.
