Sunderland, UK--GRIEVING family members are furious after bungling cemetery gardeners took a strimmer through a floral tribute – for the second time. Robert Dover spends every day tending a corner of Easington Lane Cemetery. But he was devastated when he saw the tops had been chopped off the daffodils he had put at the graveside just the day before.
A dozy digger had strimmed through the flowers as he cut the grass in the graveyard for the first time this year.
Robert, 57, said the same thing happened last year and he got a letter of apology from Sunderland City Council. He was speechless when it happened again on Wednesday.
"I can't believe anyone could be so insensitive. There was no need for them to even cut the grass in this corner, because I had already done it. There were bits of leaves and grass and flower heads scattered about," he said.
"We have complained and been told they will tidy it up and plant some more daffodils, but that's not the point."
Robert lives in Murton Lane, Easington Lane. Several members of his family, including his dad, brother-in-law and stillborn twin nephews, are buried in one area of the cemetery.
Robert started taking an interest in the cemetery when his father, also Robert Dover, died in 1995 aged 72.
Over the years he has planted hundreds of flowers and plants in the corner and even put a seat there for visitors.
Bob Moody also has relations buried in the graveyard. He keeps one corner of the cemetery – about 25 graves – in immaculate condition.
Bob, 58, who lives in Lilywhite Terrace, said the council was not doing enough to look after the cemetery. There were several gravestones toppled over, while vandals were getting into an empty house in the grounds, he said.
Both men said that last year there had been a spate of people breaking into the cemetery and stealing objects from graves. Members of the public were even going up to lock the gates themselves at night.
Robert said: "The only way you get something done in this cemetery is if you do it yourself. "
A spokesman for Sunderland City Council said: "The grounds maintenance manager spoke to Mr Dover on Wednesday night and met him again on site on Thursday morning to discuss his concerns.
"Apologies have been offered to Mr Dover for any distress caused when a temporary member of staff unfortunately strimmed over ones of his relation's graves in which he had planted daffodils.
"The manager has made appropriate arrangements to redress the situation."

Death does not concern us, because as long as we exist, death is not here. And when it does come, we no longer exist.
