Town postpones development of possible ancient burial ground PDF Print E-mail

Long Island, NY--In a change in town policy, Southampton officials have decided to slow down a proposed subdivision in Shinnecock Hills until they can examine the technology involved in determining whether the property in question is the site of an ancient Shinnecock burial ground.
Several years ago, the town's failure to take steps to preserve a similar site led to massive demonstrations and arrests at the Parsnip Pond development near Southampton College, and the problem has also cropped up on Shelter Island where a man digging the foundation of a barn a few years ago came across the remains of an Indian and was allowed to continue his construction project after a brief delay.

At the town board meeting Tuesday night, a routine resolution to accept a scenic easement - normally voted on as part of the sub-division process - was protested by several Shinnecocks and their supporters.

After a brief executive session, the town board voted unanimously to adjourn the vote for a month, saying it needed to explore the kinds of technology available to evaluate what may be a classic pre-history site, something that could date back 4,000 years. There was talk of high-tech methods such as ground-penetrating radar, but nothing specific was urged.

"I don't want to read about us in the paper like I did about Shelter Island," Supervisor Patrick Heaney said to one of the protesters in the hall after the vote.

Epitaphs are cheap, and they do a poor chap a world of good after he is dead, especially if he had hard luck while he was alive. I wish they were used more.
