KANSAS CITY - A construction worker grading land Monday in Weston unearthed an unmarked grave, possibly from the mid-1800s. The grave was near Library Drive and Missouri 45, next to construction of a subdivision, said Police Chief Terry Blanton.
The mummified remains were tucked inside a casket made of metal, possibly iron, Blanton said. The body was wearing white gloves, a dress shirt and a frock coat.

Blanton said authorities are trying to determine whether the remains belonged to a member of the Henry Huvendahl family, who may have purchased land near Weston in 1847. Based on clothing found in the casket, Blanton said, the remains could be of a man who was born 110 to 140 years ago.

According to local historians, the family probably owned a burial plot in the area where the remains were discovered. Several family members were buried there but were later moved to another cemetery in Weston. Not all of the bodies were moved because some graves were unmarked.

Blanton said the remains were taken to an area funeral home.
