The Esikhawini man who was accused of cannibalism has died, but his victims are still in the mortuary.

Elvis Mathenjwa was admitted to Ngwelezane hospital with gastro-enteritis on September 22. he died five days later of natural causes. Last year Mathenjwa was arrested for the alleged murder of two women in Richards Bay's eSikhawini township but was later released by a court.

He was admitted to Ngwelezane Hospital under the name of Themba Mathenjwa. According to the hospital he died on September 27 of natural causes.

However, according to Supt Hannes Mouton, he had "numerous injuries on his body that seem to have been sustained recently".

The family of one of his alleged victims, Gloria Mthembu, told the Daily News that they had waited for more than a year to bury her.

Mthembu's stepson, Vusi Myeni, said the family was disappointed by the treatment they had received at the hands of the police.

Myeni said his family had been to the mortuary after Mathenjwa had been released from prison because they had wanted to bury Gloria.

"They told us at the mortuary that the body could not be released," said Myeni.

Police spokesman Supt Jay Naicker said that Mthembu's remains could not be released until the forensic investigations had been completed.

Naicker also said that although the hospital had said that Mathenjwa had died of natural causes, a post-mortem had been conducted, but the results could not be released as yet.

The longer I live, the more I am certain that the great difference between the great and the insignificant, is energy - invincible determination--a purpose once fixed, and then death or victory.
