NEIGHBOURS of a 41-year-old mother reacted with shock and horror to an alleged confession by her boyfriend that he ate her. Fugitive Paul Durant, who is being held in Spain over the murder of Karen Durrell, wrote to a national newspaper from his prison cell claiming he had dismembered the mother-of-two before eating some of her remains within days of their meeting.

The 44-year-old, who is wanted by the Metropolitan Police for armed robbery, claims he killed Karen, of Emsworth Road, near Repton Park in Woodford Bridge, in Calpe, a holiday beauty spot near Benidorm where she planned to start a new life.

He told the newspaper: "I believed God had delivered her to me."

A visibly shocked neighbour of Karen and her parents, Dave and Carol Wood, said: "Her mum and dad are really lovely people. Karen only lived with them for a short while, I only knew her to say hello to.

"What is meant to have happened to her is truly awful and I hope for the sake of her family it turns out not to be true."

One elderly resident said it was all very upsetting: "That is awful. I knew her mum and dad and this must be very hard for them."

Durant was arrested for Karen's murder in March. Spanish police were alerted when Karen's family reported her missing in February.

A Foreign Office spokesman said it would not be commenting on speculation surrounding the murder of Karen Durrell as it was part of an ongoing inquiry by the Spanish authorities.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said it was unable to comment specifically on Karen Durrell's murder and allegations made in a national newspaper as it was a matter the Spanish authorities were dealing with.

However she said: "The Metropolitan Police Flying Squad is currently liaising with the Spanish authorities regarding a 44-year-old man arrested in Spain in connection with a Spanish murder inquiry.

"The man is being sought by the Metropolitan Police Service in connection with an investigation of armed robbery. He was arrested by police in connection with this matter on December 2, 2003, and subsequently escaped from the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel following treatment for an injury to his hand.

"The MPS is liaising with Spanish authorities though the Spanish investigation will take precedence over any UK matters."
