What a way to go - Northern NSW business creates beautiful hand-painted designs on recycled cardboard coffins

Australia - Evelyn Jones and Julie Ward, co-owners of The Rose and The Lily Funeral Wares, say that the funeral industry in Australia is undergoing massive transformation and people are looking at all the alternatives. Evelyn and Julie specialise in creating unique coffin designs for their customers as well as providing standard designs for when a coffin is needed quickly. “We realised from organising funerals for our parents that the option of a personalised and beautiful coffin just wasn’t there” said Evelyn and Julie.” That’s what got us started. And when we looked into it further there was also a huge need for an eco-friendly coffin. Traditional coffins can be very toxic and there’s also the issue of precious timber resources.

A lot of people don’t want an old-growth tree to be chopped down just to be buried or burned.”

Evelyn and Julie decided to find a coffin that was environmentally friendly and able to be decorated and they found just what they were looking for here in Australia. The “earthbeds” range was born and consists of a casket that is made from 100% recycled cardboard and a more traditionally shaped coffin that is made from 85 % recycled cardboard. Both vessels are strong and capable of safely carrying up to 120 kg and fully comply with all requirements of the funeral industry as well as the Health Departments in all states and territories.

“A lot of people say that choosing a coffin is the hardest part of organising a funeral. We hope our selection of creative, eco-friendly caskets and coffins makes this decision not only easier but also gives people something really special to remember in the years to come,” said Evelyn and Julie.
