Stuart Rosenberg, director of `Amityville Horror,' dies at 79 PDF Print E-mail

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- The director of the Long Island haunted-house tale "The Amityville Horror" has died. Stuart Rosenberg, a prolific director of series television and theatrical films who partnered with Paul Newman on the widely popular prison drama "Cool Hand Luke," was 79. He died of a heart attack Thursday at his home in Beverly Hills, his son said. Rosenberg's first film was "Cool Hand Luke," the 1967 drama starring Newman as an inmate on a chain gang who becomes an unlikely hero.

"The Amityville Horror," in 1979, was probably his most financially successful film.

"Horror," one of the most famous haunted house stories ever, was spawned by a man's brief stay in an Amityville, N.Y., home.

The man, George "Lee" Lutz, became famous after moving his new bride and three children into a three-story Dutch colonial in 1975. About a year earlier, six members of the DeFeo family had been shot and killed in the home. Ronald DeFeo Jr., the eldest son, was convicted of the murders.

The Lutzes lived in the home for 28 days before being driven out _ by the spirits of the DeFeos, according to Lutz's account.

The movie chronicled horrors including visions of walls oozing slime, moving furniture, a visit from a demonic pig named Jodie and spontaneous levitation.

Rosenberg also directed Robert Redford in the 1980 prison film "Brubaker" and Mickey Rourke in 1984's "The Pope of Greenwich Village."

He started out by directing episodes of television series in the 1950s, beginning with "Decoy," which starred Beverly Garland as a New York policewoman.
