By Tracy Garcia Staff Writer WHITTIER - Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary officials are hoping to draw the attention of thousands of freeway motorists who zoom by their business every day by using some of their most cherished and nostalgic memories. By recalling favorite fashion fads like hot pants to the days when people used to listen to heavyweight boxing bouts on the radio, Rose Hills' new electronic billboard on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway is taking drivers down memory lane in a creative effort to promote their business. "The idea was that we would build a sign that prompted people to remember something in their lives that was valuable to them," said Nick Clark, marketing director for Rose Hills. "All we meant to do is for drivers, on their way to work, for a brief moment to remember something, some chapter of their life, some vignette." The large white sign just north of the Pomona (60) Freeway is topped by the words, "Worth Remembering," followed by the memory and the name and birth year of the person who submitted it, then the Rose Hills logo. At this point, Clark said, the billboard is in the testing phase, with the displayed memories coming only from Rose Hills employees. But eventually, Rose Hills would like to create a Web site where anyone can log on, submit their memory and information, and possibly catch it on the billboard as they drive by. "But people pay good money to have their messages scroll in \ Times Square," he added. "This would be free, and I'm sure it'll be surprising to see what people remember and choose to share." The billboard could also be used to display information about upcoming community events at Rose Hills, such as the free Festival of Lights event that takes place every year at Christmastime. "It's interactive with those who drive by every day, and it promotes the park at the same time," Clark said. "I'm excited. I think we could have people who mention historic things like the Titanic or the civil rights marches," he added. "Hundreds of thousands of people will drive by that sign every day, and if we get something like that in there, I think it would just blow people away." http://www.sgvtribune.com/news/ci_4952330
