Afghan government "deeply saddened" by German skull scandal PDF Print E-mail

KABUL, Afghanistan

The Afghan government said Thursday it was "deeply saddened" by published photos of German soldiers posing with a human skull in Afghanistan, condemning the act as being "against Islamic values."
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry called on German authorities to "investigate the matter, bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure such actions are not repeated."

Germany's Bild newspaper published photos on Wednesday and Thursday that showed German soldiers with blacked-out faces handling a skull and putting it on the hood of their vehicle. One soldier is seen exposing himself with the skull. It dated the pictures to early 2003.

German officials expressed disgust and launched an investigation. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the photos "repugnant" and said they "can be excused by nothing."
NATO, which commands the 2,750 German forces in Afghanistan, said Thursday that the scandal could have a damaging effect on their already difficult mission in the insurgency-wracked and deeply conservative Muslim nation.

"There is the potential for the alleged conduct of a few soldiers to be misrepresented and distorted in a way that can have a damaging effect," said Maj. Luke Knittig, the spokesman for the NATO-led force in Afghanistan.

However, there has been no reaction on the streets in Afghanistan, currently celebrating Eid-al-Fitr, the main Muslim holiday of the year.

"The government and the people of Afghanistan have been deeply saddened by the news of the desecration of a human skull by German soldiers in Afghanistan," the Foreign Ministry statement said.

It said the behavior of the German soldiers "goes against Islamic values and Afghan traditions."

German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung said Thursday that six suspects were under investigation and that such behavior had "no place" in the country's military.

Knittig said NATO would help German authorities "in any way we can" in their probe.

Most of the German soldiers serving in 32,000 strong NATO-led force are based in relatively quiet northern provinces of Kunduz and Badakhshan.
