Vietnamese police bust ring selling ‘remains’ of US soldiers PDF Print E-mail

Police in the southern Vietnamese city Can Tho arrested four persons for selling apparently fake remains of American soldiers missing in action (MIA) for US$6,000 each, storing the corpses, and fraud. However, the ringleader is still at large,
The police arrested in late March Nguyen Van Chien and a woman in her fifties for selling the “remains” of US servicemen killed during the Vietnam War and confiscated at least three human remains.

The duo now face charges of fraud and violating Vietnamese laws governing human remains and tombs.

Two others, who bought them in the hope the corpses would fetch them a visa to the US, were also arrested for illegally storing human remains.

Bold scams

Chien told one of the victims, Hoa [not her real name], late last year that an international non-profit organization was allowing anyone handing over the remains of an MIA to immigrate to the US and getting them a job paying several thousand dollars a month.

Chien added he knew someone selling a soldier’s corpse for VND90-100 million ($5,625-$6,250).

His family had bought one and was completing procedures to settle in the US, he told her to complete the deception.

The gullible victim went with him to Ho Chi Minh City and met two women, Hai and Tu, who agreed to sell a corpse for VND90 million.

For VND66.5 million ($4,156) Hoa got a corpse in a polythene body bag. She was also given a stainless steel badge which Tu said belonged to the body.

Hai was later arrested while Tu is still at large.

Pawning land to buy dead body

In November last year, Thanh [not his real name] was invited to a party Chien threw, purportedly to celebrate the latter’s due emigration to the US.

Chien conned him into believing it was because he handed over an MIA’s remains and said he would introduce him to a “reliable remains trader”.

Thanh pawed two hectares of land and went to Ho Chi Minh and Can Tho city to meet Tu who agreed to sell a corpse for VND100 million ($6,250).

The police are now investigating if the remains actually belonged to US soldiers and where they were from.

Thanh Nien discovered a dozen others have also fallen into the swindlers’ trap.
