POLICE are baffled after the ashes of a man cremated in England were found 157 miles away outside an Indian restaurant in Lanarkshire. The remains of James McEwan, who was cremated on August 30 last year, were found on a pavement by the restaurant owner.
The gold - coloured urn bore the inscription: "Deceased, James McEwan, 30/08/05, Durham Crematorium".

Last night, police in Wishaw appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

They believe some of the ashes may already have been scattered.

The owner of the Almas Tandoori restaurant handed the urn into Wishaw Police Office on Sunday night.

PC Paul Gavin said: "I have been in the police for 25 years and I have never had anything like this handed in before.

"When I saw the ashes had come from Durham, I couldn't believe it.

"We have made inquiries with the crematorium and are waiting to hear back from them.

"The family may be embarrassed to come forward but we would appeal to them to get in touch so we can return the urn."

Last night a spokesman for Durham Crematorium said the funeral director responsible for the urn had been contacted.

He added: "I can confirm the urn did come from here.

"Efforts have been made to contact the family. This is a very sensitive matter and it is not appropriate for us to speculate."

We cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.
