Morgue seeks one last family PDF Print E-mail

GALVESTON — The county morgue is still looking for the family of a man whose cremated remains were found in a defunct mortuary last month, more than 10 years after his death. John Florence, spokesman for the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office, said relatives of three deceased persons called him Tuesday, in response to a Daily News article published that day.

The article featured Florence’s attempts to find family members to take the cremated remains of four people.

Galveston police officer David Roark was checking the building that had housed the Lundy Mortuary, 2728 Ball St., for transients before it was demolished when he opened a door and found five boxes that police said were labeled “cremated human remains.”

Inside the boxes were small containers filled with the remains of five county residents, each of whom died more than 10 years ago. Police initially said one of the boxes bore no name, but Florence said Friday that all five sets of remains had been identified.

Florence said he found one woman’s daughter before the article’s publication, and three more family members of other decedents afterward.

One call came from the caretaker of an elderly woman who told Florence the woman had been surprised to read of her death in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily News. The woman was the widow of Benjamin Franklin Sills Jr., an island resident who died a decade ago.

“That’s a computer for you,” Florence said. “I looked up Mr. Sills’ next of kin, and there was a listing for Mrs. Sills, but the listing stated a death certificate had been issued for her.”

The last person for whom Florence was seeking relatives was Ernest Washington, who died in El Paso at age 81. His remains were shipped back to Galveston after his death.

Florence asked that anyone who knew how to reach Washington’s family call him at (409) 935-9274.
