Remains Found at Former Funeral Home PDF Print E-mail

Lawrenceville, GA — The cremated remains of an infant were found Thursday morning in a former funeral home that closed last spring. The remains were found in a white box by the building’s current owner, Jimmy Knick, who bought the structure at 168 Scenic Highway in April.

Previously, the one-story building had housed Warbington Mortuary, which was evicted that month by sheriff’s deputies for failure to pay rent.

The same establishment made headlines in 2003 when the owner’s son was charged with killing a friend and stashing his decomposing body under a bed at the funeral home. He was convicted in June. Knick said he and another man were removing trash and debris from the building’s interior when they encountered the small box that read, “Infant Johnson — return to family Monday.”

After looking inside the box, Knick immediately called Lawrenceville police.

“I just didn’t want to throw it away,” Knick said two hours after he stumbled across the container.

By Thursday afternoon, police had identified the cremains and were trying to locate relatives. They were also trying to determine why the ashes had been at the funeral home for several years.

Police said the cremains were those of Mia Rochelle Johnson, who was apparently born Sept. 28, 2001, and who died Jan. 2, 2002, of respiratory failure and apnea of prematurity.

The mother has been tentatively identified as Quitta Johnson, said Lawrenceville police Maj. Paul King.

We are “doing some research trying to locate family members of the deceased child so we can arrange to deliver the cremated remains to them,” King said.

It is unknown why the cremains were left at the mortuary, including whether family members failed to retrieve them, King said.

“That’s one of the things we are trying to determine,” King said.

Jordan Warbington Jr., who owned the funeral home for 19 years, was called to the site by police. He brought records that helped identify family members and was aiding authorities, King said. Efforts to contact Warbington on Thursday were unsuccessful.

For almost two decades Warbington was known for helping low-income families bury their loved ones with dignity and respect, but his once-thriving business fell on hard times when some customers failed to pay their bills.

Warbington’s business hit another bump in May 2003 when the decomposing body of 43-year-old Kenneth “Tate” Cain was found in a body bag under his son’s bed. His son, Jordan Lee Warbington III, 37, who lived at the funeral home, was convicted this summer of murdering Cain by striking him repeatedly over the head with a ceremonial sword and was sentenced to life in prison.

When deputies evicted the funeral home last spring, they removed caskets and floral arrangements, leaving the items outside. Knick said he began cleaning out what was left behind Thursday.

“This building has got some history,” Knick said. State law does not allow mortuaries to withhold cremated remains if a customer fails to pay their tab. However, state law provides no guidance on what to do with cremated remains if relatives or friends fail to pick them up.

Death is no more than passing from one room into another. But there's a difference for me, you know. Because in that other room I shall be able to see.

Hear lies cut down in youth,
One who loved & obeyed the truth
As you pass by, Look on & see
