Complaint Filed Against Funeral Home That Wrongfully Cremated Body; Investigation Sought into Swanson's Practices

April 28, 2005

DETROIT, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- A Detroit family filed a complaint this week with the State, asking that an inquiry be done into the practices of Swanson Funeral Home after the business wrongfully cremated a relative's body. The state complaint comes as the family nears the second anniversary of the death of Willie Williams, who died May 19, 2003 at age 85. On the eve of Mr. Williams' funeral services, the family learned that Swanson Funeral Home had improperly cremated Mr. Williams' body. The family had planned to inter Mr. Williams at Detroit Memorial Cemetery, where his children, wife, stepfather and mother are buried.

"We had a funeral planned, and instead, we had to have a memorial service," said Willie George, Mr. Williams' grandson. "None of his family and friends got to say goodbye."

The cremation also violated sacredly held religious beliefs, family members said.

The funeral home claims that a janitor mistakenly took the body to be cremated. When the family was notified, they were given a box which they were told contained Mr. Williams' remains. The box had someone else's name on it.

The Department of Labor's Bureau of Commercial Services Economic Enforcement Division is being asked to review the practices of the funeral home and to give a full accounting of what happened to Mr. Williams' body.

"We've been asking for two years, and we still haven't received an answer that makes sense. We need to find out exactly what happened to my grandfather, so we want the State to take a look at this," said George. "We also want to make sure that something like this never happens again."

State Sen. Hansen Clarke, D-Detroit, is also introducing legislation this week that will require a funeral director to supervise any unlicensed person at a funeral home who takes a body to a crematorium. The family sought the law change in response to the problems with Swanson.

Mr. Williams was a retired City of Detroit worker who operated an east side, neighborhood blues bar, The Red Rooster. Through his establishment, he helped the community by hosting Easter egg hunts, Halloween and Christmas parties for children, as well as contributing to neighborhood improvement efforts. He is survived by four children, four stepchildren, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
