Crematory Operator In Wrong Ashes Case Charged PDF Print E-mail

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The owner of a shuttered cremation service has been charged with fraud for allegedly giving the wrong ashes to relatives.

The State Attorney's Office and the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation have shut down All-State Cremation. Owner Mark Monti, 48, was charged Friday with schemes to defraud.

"The problem was not with the bodies, but with the ashes," said investigator Francis Monaco. "A container of ashes was returned to a family prior to the family member being cremated."

One relative became suspicious when she saw a portion of a cremation certificate had been whited out, according to an emergency order suspending Monti's business.

The woman later discovered her deceased relative was cremated six days after the family received ashes.

According to a state affidavit, Monti could not afford to cremate the bodies but supplied the families with ashes because he had already charged them $500.

They count as quite forgot; They are as men who have existed not; Theirs is a loss past loss of fitful breath; It is the second death.
