Man Accused Of Cremation Mix-Ups Is In Witness Protection Program PDF Print E-mail

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- There's another twist in the case of a Daytona Beach man accused of mixing up the cremated remains of people in Central Florida. Channel 9 has now discovered the suspect is in the witness protection program for testifying against the mafia. It turns out the owner, Mark Montie, isn't even using his real name. In fact, in court Monday, prosecutors revealed he has a rap sheet that goes back to the 1970s.

Monti obviously didn't volunteer this information in court. But the state attorney wasn't bashful. In open court she exposed Monti's other life and other crimes.

A strange case keeps getting stranger. For months we've told you about Mark Monti, only to find out we've really been telling you about Robert Colannino. He was put in the witness protection program in the '70s for ratting on the mob in Rhode Island.

Now he's arrested for messing up human remains at his cremation business in Daytona Beach. For months he's been missing until police caught him in Fort Pierce.

In court, we found out he has quite a rap sheet, dating back decades.

Of course, some people had already smelled a rat. Emma Counts trusted Monti with her husband's remains in February. The cremation never happened. Her husband's body was found at a crematory in North Florida.

As for Monti, he says his health is at risk. He's been hospitalized for chest pains three times since April, each time right before the cuffs were about to be slapped on. He says jail would be unhealthy.

You may be wondering how we can tell you all this information. We did check to see if we should go on the air with Monti's real name and history. The State Attorney's Office told us everything that came out Monday is part of the public record. Monti is being held on $50,000 bond.
