Charlottesville Daily Progress Saturday, November 4, 2006 Coffins are macabre enough for most people - never mind a coffin with a skeleton still inside. But that’s exactly what an Illinois museum received in a recent donation. Wait, it gets weirder. The rare 1870s-era glass-topped casket had been found in a secret cupboard, in an old building, in a room once used by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The skeleton was missing a kneecap and several wrist bones, and was wired together in a way that allowed the jaw to move. It was also wired to the casket. Its identity is unknown, but a medical examiner believes the remains are those of a young adult male born around 1880. Donors recently asked if the Springfield museum would take the whole package - casket and bones together. Sure, said its director.
