Construction on a new development in Stamping Ground was put on hold after workers uncovered an old casket. Archeologists are carefully excavating a coffin with human remains that dates back to the 1800's. It was found right next to First Baptist Church in Stamping Ground on Wood Lake Road.

The church's historian77-year old Mary Young says she has records of the land the church was built on and other graves in the area, but no record of this newly found coffin. Young and many others in Stamping Ground gathered at the excavation site Monday to watch as it was unearthed.

"I like history anyway, and since I'm the historian I want to be in on whatever is going on up here," Young explained from her front row seat next to her husband as they watched experts dig.

Archeologists from the Kentucky Archeological Survey say the coffin may be part of an old family cemetery that was there before the church was built, which Young says was in 1840.

Experts used a metal detector and discovered there may be more undocumented graves in the area. They tell Action News 36 they will likely rebury the grave after their study is complete.
