THE horror of 9/11 presented New York with this reality: Our task is not to build a soaring memorial Downtown to honor our abstract dead. Rather, we must create a cemetery, where the city will bury flesh and bone.
Forty blocks north of Ground Zero, refrigerated trailers preserve the remains of the unidentified victims of 9/11.

New York's medical examiner has pushed the limits of DNA technology to give relatives the remains of their deceased. But, 27 months later, the only gravesite for hundreds of families is in an industrial tent.

9/11 survivors have asked for, and received, one assurance from Downtown re-development officials: The unidentified physical remnants of their loved ones will be permanently interred at the WTC site.

Each of the eight competing memorial schemes unveiled last month includes a burial vault. But all eight deflect this darker truth. Instead, they emphasize bright depictions of waterfalls, tiny candles and holographic faces.
