Forensic teams reopen body bags

January 5, 2005 Forensic workers in Thailand have the grim task of reopening some 600 bags containing bodies of tsunami victims, after identification data on them was washed away. Work to reidentify the corpses is being undertaken at three temples in Phang Nga province. The bodies of some 1,800 victims of the disaster have been collected in Phang Nga. A Thai forensic expert says the antiseptic solution sprayed on the body bags has dissolved the markings on their identification tags. The tags do not bear names, but they do contain information on whether the body is that of a Thai national or a foreign tourist. The tags also contain information on what clothes the body had been wearing, whether it had tattoos and DNA and dental identification. Toll Meanwhile, Thailand's Interior Ministry has for the first time given separate figures for Thais and foreigners who are missing in the tsunami devastated country.
