Lucille Ball tops favourite dead celeb list

More than 15 years after her death, Americans still love Lucy, voting legend Lucille Ball tops in a list of the most popular dead celebrities.
Marketing Evaluations, Inc. the company that developed the "Q score" method of determining a celebrity's current popularity among the general U.S. public, has published the latest of its biennial "Dead Q" lists charting the country's favourite departed performers.

"What is there not to like about Lucy?" company president Steve Levitt told the Associated Press.

She was followed by performer Bob Hope, western actor John Wayne, average hero actor Jimmy Stewart and clowny comedian Red Skelton.

The top 10 also included The Honeymooners star Jackie Gleason, Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz and Little House on the Prairie patriarch Michael Landon. Talk-show host Johnny Carson and actor John Ritter were the two newcomers on the list.

Often when deceased celebrities are used in current advertising or their work reappears on TV or in film, the public is reminded of them, Levitt said, pointing to the fact that Ball, who has previously topped the "Dead Q" list, still turns up on TV when episodes of I Love Lucy or her comedy specials are rebroadcast.

"Some of these deceased personalities have Q scores equal to or greater than some of the live personalities we measure," he said.

For more than four decades, Levitt's company has mailed out a questionnaire to about 1,200 consumers across the U.S. They are given a list of celebrities and asked if they recognize them and to rate how much they like them.

Researchers compile the responses and calculate the "Q score," which measures familiarity and likeability. Advertisers, broadcasters and those in the movie industry are among those interested in the information.

Of the 169 personalities on the latest "Dead Q" questionnaire, diet doctor Robert Atkins ranked the lowest.

Tom Hanks has been the most popular living star in the company's last few surveys.
