Family reclaims cremated remains donated to Salvation Army

WAUKEGAN, Ill. - The cremated remains of an 89-year-old man that were mistakenly donated to a Salvation Army in suburban Chicago were reclaimed by a relative Thursday. Homer Oglesby's ashes were dropped off along with other household items at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Waukegan about two weeks ago, administrator Pamela Church said. While sorting through the donated goods, an employee noticed the sealed plastic bag of ashes in a box labeled "temporary container." A certificate of cremation that accompanied the ashes said they were the remains of Oglesby, who died Nov. 11, 2003, in Waukegan. The center placed the remains on a filing cabinet and started searching for family members to reclaim the ashes. "We knew it was a mistake, and we wanted to show Homer proper respect," Church said. A few relatives were located but they did not want to be responsible for the remains, Church said. But after the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald published an article about the remains Thursday, a granddaughter appeared at the center. "She was pleasant, but I could tell she was a bit uncomfortable probably because of the publicity," Church said.
