MADISON, Wis. -- A federal grand jury in Wisconsin has indicted a La Crosse, Wis.,-area recluse for collecting his mother's Social Security checks after she died and he put her body in a basement freezer. The grand jury also charged Philip Schuth with possessing a sawed-off shotgun and 19 homemade cluster bombs.

Schuth was arrested last April after an all-night stand-off with police outside his crumbling home. The stand-off began after he shot at a neighbor.

Police found a cache of weapons and explosives in the house, along with Schuth's mother's body encased in ice in a basement chest freezer.

Schuth told police his mother died naturally in 2000, but he hid her body so he could go on getting her Social Security. He said he had never held a job. He was sentenced to seven years in prison on state charges last November.

The federal indictment accuses him of defrauding the federal government of $35,000 in Social Security benefits meant for his mother over the last five years.

Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind; Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave. I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.
