MU offers DNA testing to funeral homes

April, 26, 2006 HUNTINGTON, WV -- Marshall University's Forensic Science Center is offering DNA preservation and testing services to local funeral homes, says Dr. Terry Fenger, director of the center. The program allows families served by participating funeral homes to preserve samples from their relatives' DNA that can be used for gene testing, inheritance and identification purposes. Strict confidentiality will be maintained. "The mortuary services we are offering to the funeral homes are unique for an organization in West Virginia, and it's a way to utilize our scientific expertise to provide services to the public," Fenger says. Family members who buy a preserved DNA sample will receive a labeled, sealed sample placed in an engraved metal case displaying the deceased person's name and "Preserved DNA Sample." The funeral home will deliver the sample to the family or an authorized representative, who will finalize the process by signing a chain-of-custody form assuring privacy.
