Funeral Home Happy to Host Weddings PDF Print E-mail

The manager of a Winnipeg funeral home says he is willing to hold weddings this year after a popular venue for receptions closed this month, but nobody is dying to take him up on his offer just yet.

Andrew Earle, manager of Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, is well aware that his offer of a newly renovated reception room may leave some brides cold. But he believes that one venue may be able to fit all, whether newly dead or nearly wed. Earle made the offer after Green Gates restaurant closed, leaving about 90 couples with no place to tie the knot and celebrate their big day. Green Gates was on a former country estate outside city limits.

"I'm sure that there'd be a few brides-to-be that wouldn't be too comfortable with it. And yet, I think if they saw our decor, they would realize that we're not the funeral home of maybe TV or movies," he said.

"We're certainly a very comfortable environment."

Earle says his reception room can hold more than 100 people and it has full kitchen facilities. He says the funeral home has just begun to put the word out that it is available for weddings and receptions, shortly after hearing that couples were stranded.

"Many of the staff really think that it's kind of a neat idea. It is certainly a little bit different. It is a sort of a call to arms to sort of help out people," Earle said.

"Hey, I've been married. I know how much pressure there is under that. And to be able to offer a sense of relief, I think we feel good about it."

Earle says he would ensure that no funerals are held on the same days as the weddings to keep all clients happy.
