State punishes Alton funeral home PDF Print E-mail

ALTON - An Alton mortuary banned Wednesday from selling funerals in advance is the second in Madison County in a week to lose its pre-needs license. Roy M. Williams, owner of Williams Mortuary, is accused of not providing all the services that some customers paid for in advance.
"Time and again, Mr. Williams was evasive and unresponsive to auditors and staff despite repeated efforts to get him to comply with the law and to audit his records." said Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes, whose department oversees funeral homes and cemeteries.

Williams could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The phone at his funeral home has been disconnected.

Williams Mortuary, 1924 Central Ave., is not associated with Cathy Williams and Sons Funeral Home, 1695 Oakwood Road, Roy Williams' former wife said Tuesday.

The investigation into Williams' financial records began in October, after a pre-needs customer complained to the comptroller that he did not get the services he paid for.

Illinois law requires funeral homes and cemeteries selling pre-need services to set aside in trust most of the money prepaid by customers. The funeral homes must file periodic reports with the comptroller on the trust accounts.

Hynes said Williams owes more than $25,000 in penalties to the comptroller's office for failure to file financial reports.

Werner-Mick Funeral Home in Pontoon Beach last week had its pre-needs license revoked by the comptroller.

The owners did not have a current bond to protect from default those who had pre-paid. They also did not respond to customer complaints, according to the comptroller's office.

Anyone concerned because they have pre-paid arrangements at either funeral home can call the comptroller's office toll-free at 1-877-203-3401.
