Former Davis funeral home owner arrested PDF Print E-mail

The former owner of a Davis funeral home was arrested Wednesday in connection with bilking thousands of dollars from local clients, including a developmentally disabled man.
Andrew Gilmore, 42, was booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of eight counts of elder abuse, seven counts of grand theft and five counts of petty theft. Bail has been set at $20,000.

The monthlong investigation was instigated by the guardian of a developmentally challenged man who learned that the Davis Funeral Chapel, at 116 D St., had been sold.

Police Sgt. Scott Smith reported an investigation revealed that the victim had previously handed over several thousand dollars to Gilmore under a "pre-need" contract. Under the plan clients prepay for services and their money is placed in a trust, arranged through the funeral home, until needed. When the money is needed, the funeral director withdraws the funds directly, thereby relieving the deceased's family of the financial burden.

Gilmore apparently deposited such funds, collected from numerous clients, into a personal bank account prior to the August 2005 sale of the funeral home and concealed his actions at the time he sold the chapel, Smith reported.

Thus far, eight elderly victims have been identified. The loss was estimated between $20,000 and $25,000.

The city of the dead bespeaks the city of the living more eloquently than any of it's other monuments, like an unconscious in which its profoundest self-image, its dreams and gods, or nightmares and want of gods, lie fossilized.
