State Alleges Cemetery Mismanagement
Lawsuit Claims Embezzlement
January 19, 2005
Hartford Courant Staff Report

West Haven, CT - The state is suing a former West Haven cemetery superintendent who allegedly spent tens of thousands of dollars of the cemetery's money for personal use and failed to properly record burial plots .

The state attorney general's office and the office of Consumer Protection Commissioner Edwin R. Rodriguez brought the action against James Sorensen of West Haven, who served as the president of the Oak Grove Cemetery Association from December 1990 to November 2003.

State officials charge that Sorensen secretly withdrew cemetery funds from Oak Grove's account in New Haven Savings Bank between January 2001 and November 2003.

Even after the cemetery fired him, Sorensen made several more illegal cash withdrawals from the account, state officials say.

The state is seeking restitution of funds and civil penalties against Sorensen. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

"This scheme struck families when they were most vulnerable - embezzling money while they mourned for a loved one," Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said in a statement. "The misery was compounded by the financial and accounting mess left for Oak Grove's management. The financial disarray nearly destroyed Oak Grove and greatly impeded our investigation."

The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court in Hartford, also charges that because Sorensen did not accurately record and register several cemetery plots for consumers, cemetery officials were unable to locate them.
