The man and woman accused of vandalizing a crypt at Myrtle Grove Cemetery in January are facing two felony charges. Daniel Edward Malin, 21, and Marsha Leann Markussen, 18, were arrested by Alcoholic Beverage Control agents on a misdemeanor allegation March 18. When they made their first court appearance, the vandalism case was brought up.
According to Humboldt County Superior Court documents, both are facing charges of mutilating grave remains and vandalism to a cemetery.

Both are still in custody at the Humboldt County Jail.

Fragments from the skull of Kenneth Newett Jr., a former district attorney who died in 1914, were found on a Cooper Gulch softball field in January.

Newett was interned in the Buhne crypt but his remains have not yet been returned because Humboldt County Coroner Frank Jager is waiting on word from the city about securing the crypt.

Jager is also awaiting a final report from the examination of a femur that was found during the investigation and determined not to belong to Newett.

Malin and Markussen are scheduled to be in court Thursday for an intervention hearing.
