Cemetery vandal sentenced for robbing the dead PDF Print E-mail

Waterbury, CT -- Brooklyn man who broke open caskets to rob the dead at a Waterbury cemetery has pleaded guilty to numerous charges. Joseph Vecchiarelli entered guilty pleas to interference with a cemetery or burial ground, narcotics possession, failure to appear in court and other offenses.

The 26-year-old Vecchiarelli, who has a heroin addiction, was charged with breaking into tombs at a cemetery and robbing bodies of jewelry and gold teeth.

The cemetery caretaker alerted Waterbury police in April that three mausoleums were smashed open.

Vecchiarelli faces more than 97 years on all the charges. The state is recommending a 20-year sentence, suspended after 10 years served and five years' probation.

He is due be sentenced November 16th.
