Okija Shrine: Lagos Businessman Declared Wanted - Brought a Fresh Corpse

P.M. News (Lagos)
August 11, 2004

A Lagos-based businessman, Bartholomew Ndukwu, has been declared wanted by the police in Anambra State for his alleged involvement in rituals at the infamous Okija shrines in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

Bartholomew, son of Ejimoo Ndukwu, one of the priests of the shrine arrested by the police during its first raid on the evil forest, was alleged to have brought a corpse to the shrine shortly before the raid. P.M.News gathered that children of priests working at the Okija shrine were initiated to worship the gods at the shrine and participate in all activities therein.

Investigations revealed that the police recovered more than 10 registers of victims during its raids on shrines. Names of some prominent indigenes of Anambra State, including politicians, lawyers, businessman, traditional rulers were reportedly found in the registers.

The State Police Command was said to be making moves to disclose the names of those found in the registers, but only after it must have completed investigation into the matter. It also plans to release the corpses to their relations so that they can get decent burial.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, has dispatched 200 mobile policemen to Anambra State to conduct more searches and unravel those behind the trade in human corpses. P.M.News learnt that the fresh move by the IGP was informed by presidential concern that the scandal had put the country in bad light and portrayed it as a nation of cannibals.

The authorities, it was gathered, had also ordered the Anambra Police Command to bring all the 32 arrested priests of Okija shrines to Abuja for further investigation.

Have you decided on eternal repose?

Quote Repository

To fear death, my friends, is only to think ourselves wise, without being wise: for it is to think that we know what we do not know. For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen to them: but they fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils. And what is this but that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know?
