Mount Olivet crypt desecrated PDF Print E-mail

An above-ground crypt at Frederick's historic Mount Olivet Cemetery was desecrated and robbed of human remains on Monday, according to the Frederick Police Department. The 118-year-old crypt held the remains of three people, police said.

Police were called to the cemetery at 7:19 p.m., Monday, and determined that the crypt had likely been disturbed the previous night.

Sgt. Bruce DeGrange said the contents inside the crypt were in disarray when police arrived and two or three human skulls were missing.

Efforts to reach relatives of those buried in the crypt have been unsuccessful, he said.

“To the best of our knowledge, the gravesite is old enough that we haven’t been able to locate any surviving family,” DeGrange said. “It wouldn’t be unusual if whatever family left has gone from the area or deceased.”

DeGrange could not speculate on the motivation of the crime, but said there were no indications of cult activity.

The main gate of the cemetery is open, but the side gates are closed at night. Entering by foot would not be difficult, said DeGrange.

Frederick police are investigating and ask anyone with information to call 301-360-3918.
