PHILADELPHIA (KYW) A bizarre incident involving stolen human skulls is getting even stranger. Investigators looking into the report at a North Philadelphia cemetery say more may have been taken than they first thought.

CBS 3’s Walt Hunter has learned that detectives returning to the New Cathedral Cemetery to investigate the theft of two human skulls, discovered the gruesome crime was even worse. Apparently, additional skulls were missing from the mausoleum like tomb.

"We’ve determined at least three, perhaps four or five skulls were taken," said Captain Len Ditchkofsky of the Philadelphia Police.

With the help of a forensic anthropologist, Hunter reports that detectives determined the thieves, who broke through the roof of the grave, apparently stole only the skulls. No additional items or valuables were removed from the nine coffins, some of which date back to 1893.

Still though, Captain Ditchkofsky said detectives have no idea as to a motive: “We don’t know, it could be some bizarre religious cult. On the other hand, it could be a teenage prank."

While investigators admit they stand little chance of catching the criminals, Hunter says they say they are making this case a top priority because what happened here is a deep level of violation.

“These people, these families had a right to rest in piece. They should never have been disturbed," Captain Ditchkofsky added.
