Police Plea Over Tomb Raiders PDF Print E-mail

POLICE say they are horrified at an attempt by sick tomb raiders to rob a grave in Wrexham.

As exclusively revealed in the Leader yesterday, macabre grave robbers opened tombs at St Giles’ Church believing they may contain bodies with expensive jewellery or valuables.

They prised off one tomb lid in the churchyard and attempted to open two others.

Canon Geoffrey Marshall, rector at St Giles’, said the opened and damaged tombs were discovered by shocked church-goers on Tuesday.

He appealed to those behind the sick raids to stay away from the table tombs, stressing the monuments were purely decorative and have never contained bodies or valuables.

He said the bodies are buried six feet under the tombs.

Distressful

The police today confirmed they were looking into the matter and voiced their concern at the actions of the culprits.

A police spokesman said: “The matter has been reported to ourselves and the local community beat manager is aware of the incident. It would take around six or eight people to raise the lids of the tombs and we are horrified individuals have gone to such trouble to open what are purely decorative tombs.

“The tombs contained no valuable items at all and there are no bodies contained within.

“We would urge anyone who sees someone undertaking this activity to contact local officers because this kind of behaviour is very distressful to relatives of those who are interred there.”

Anyone who has information about the incident should contact Wrexham Police on 01978 290222.
