Search Resumes for Body Stolen from Graveyard PDF Print E-mail

Scotland-A specialist team of police officers will resume their search today for the remains of a woman whose body was stolen from a graveyard. The hunt for the body of Gladys Hammond began yesterday when officers started combing several areas of the 90-acre Brakenhurst Woods, near Newchurch, Staffordshire.

Animal rights extremists claim to have hidden the 82-year-old’s corpse, which was stolen from her final resting place at St Peter’s Church in the nearby village of Yoxall last October.

The pensioner is believed to have been targeted because her son-in-law runs a farm in Newchurch which breeds guinea pigs for medical research.

Last month, a group calling itself the Animal Rights Militia wrote to a number of local media organisations claiming that one-sixth of Mrs Hammond’s remains were in a sealed plastic container buried 2ft underground in the woods.

The search, which is expected to last until Thursday, involves specialist ground-search teams and techniques, as well as an underwater search team from Nottinghamshire Police.

The woods are within a mile of Darley Oaks farm, which has been the focus of regular protests from animal rights activists for the past six years.

Five people remain on police bail as part of the investigation.

Police said yesterday they were “positive” about recovering Mrs Hammond’s remains.
