Tomb raiders plunder Iban graves in north Sarawak PDF Print E-mail

BY STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: Tomb raiders have plundered some two dozen graves in a remote Iban cemetery 150km south of here, destroying coffins and scattering the bones of those buried.

Police believe it was the work of a team of “specialist grave robbers” that had desecrated hundreds of graves in central Sarawak last year. The latest case occurred at a longhouse settlement called Rumah Tugang, located in Suai district just next to the Miri-Bintulu divisional boundary.

Longhouse residents discovered on Tuesday night that over 20 coffins had been dug up and forced open.

Miri acting police chief Supt Abang Abdillah Datuk Abang Othman yesterday confirmed receiving a report on the incident.

The grave robbers had acted in a very shameful and uncivilised manner, he said.

“We believe those who committed the act in Suai are from the same syndicate that operated in Sibu,” he said.

This, he said, was the first reported case of tombs being plundered in northern Sarawak.

It is still a traditional practice for many Ibans to bury expensive personal items belonging to those who have died along with their remains.
